How to take your Canada passport photo at home
- This is prep, not your final photo. Canada's IRCC only accepts photos taken in person by a commercial photographer and professionally printed — a home shot is not submittable. Use these steps to know exactly what to ask the photographer for.
- Specify 50 × 70 mm. Canada's size is unusually large: 50 × 70 mm, head 31–36 mm chin-to-crown (about half the frame — a smaller head share than most countries). Tell the photographer the Canadian passport spec explicitly.
- Ask for a plain white background. Uniform white, no shadow. IRCC rejects any tint or visible shadow.
- No digital alteration. IRCC prohibits any retouching or editing — including background replacement and AI tools. Don't ask the photographer to 'clean it up'.

Canada visa photo
Canadian visa applications (visitor visa, work permit, study permit) follow the same in-person, photographer-taken rule. IRCC does NOT accept self-taken photos for any official document — passport, citizenship, visa, PR card, NEXUS.
Privacy: why no upload matters
Most online passport-photo tools (PhotoGov, PhotoAID, Snap2Pass, 123PassportPhoto) upload your photo to their servers, run cropping there, and send back the result. Even when they're trustworthy, your face is sitting on someone else's infrastructure for some period of time. The photographer will print your photos with their name and the date on the back, satisfying IRCC's requirements.
What's the exact Canadian passport photo size?
50 × 70 mm — significantly larger than the global ICAO 9303 35 × 45 mm. Head height (chin to crown) must measure 31–36 mm. The face fills only ~45–51% of the frame — much smaller than other countries' specs.
Are glasses allowed in Canadian passport photos?
No. IRCC banned all eyewear including clear lenses, prescription glasses, sunglasses, and tinted lenses. There's no medical exception in the Canadian rule.
