How to take your Japan passport photo at home
- Plain white background. MOFA requires a uniform white background with no shadow behind the head.
- Asymmetric margins — the head sits high. Japan is unusual: 4 mm above the head, 7 mm below the chin. The face is not centred — it sits in the upper part of the frame. The Japan preset applies this offset automatically.
- Head 34 mm crown-to-chin. About 75% of the 45 mm height. Sit close enough that the head fills the frame without cropping the crown.
- Soft daylight, no flash. Front light from a window; no shadow on the face or the background.
- Glasses off, neutral expression. Remove eyewear; mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the camera.

Japan visa photo
Japanese visas (work, student, spouse) use the same 35 × 45 mm format. The Japan visa portal accepts the same photo as a passport application — same dimensions, same background, same head position.
Privacy: why no upload matters
