How to take your United States passport photo at home
- Use a pure white wall. The State Department rejects off-white, cream, or any visible shadow. Stand about half a metre off a plain white wall so your shadow falls out of frame rather than behind your head.
- Daylight, no flash. Face a window during the day. On-camera flash causes hotspots and red-eye that fail the US review; you want soft, even light with no harsh side shadow.
- Take your glasses off. Eyewear has been banned since 2016 — including clear lenses and reading glasses. A medical exception needs a signed doctor's letter filed with the application.
- Neutral face, both eyes open. Mouth closed, no smile, no teeth, looking straight at the lens, hair clear of the eyes.
- Don't 'enhance' it — then crop to 2×2 in. Since January 2026 any AI processing (Portrait-mode blur, beauty filters, background-replacement apps, skin smoothing) is an automatic rejection. Shoot a clean source photo and use this tool only to crop to 2×2 inches / 600×600 px.

Baby and infant photos
Infant photos use the same 2×2 inch frame, but eyes must be fully open and no other people (or hands holding the head) may appear in the shot. Lay the baby flat on a plain white sheet; no chairs or carriers in frame.
