How to take your India passport photo at home
- Plain white background. Passport Seva requires a white background with even light. The visible head — top of hair to chin — must fill 80–85% of the frame, larger than most countries.
- Digital photo is exactly 630 × 810 px. The Seva portal expects a 630 × 810 px JPEG. This tool's India preset outputs that exact pixel size; other sizes fail the upload.
- Daylight, no flash, no shadow. Face a window. No shadow on the white background or across the face — one of the most common Seva rejections.
- No glasses, neutral expression. Eyewear is not accepted. Mouth closed, both eyes open, hair clear of the eyes.
- No AI editing — then crop to 630×810. Under Passport Seva Program 2.0 (effective February 2026), AI-edited photos — beauty filters, Portrait-mode blur, background-replacement apps — are rejected. Shoot a clean photo; use this tool only to crop to spec.

India visa photo
India visa applications (e-Visa, OCI, PIO) typically use a SQUARE 51 × 51 mm / 350 × 350 px format — different from the passport's 35 × 45 mm. Don't reuse a passport photo for an e-Visa application.
Baby and infant photos
Infants up to 4 years old: same 35 × 45 mm format applies, but a relaxed expression is acceptable. The child must be alone in frame — parents' arms or hands cannot be visible. White background is mandatory.
Privacy: why no upload matters
Most online passport-photo tools (PhotoGov, PhotoAID, Snap2Pass, 123PassportPhoto) upload your photo to their servers, run cropping there, and send back the result. Even when they're trustworthy, your face is sitting on someone else's infrastructure for some period of time. What's the exact pixel size for the Passport Seva online portal?
Exactly 630 × 810 pixels (width × height), JPEG format, file size ≤250 KB. The portal will reject the upload if the dimensions are off by even one pixel, or if the file is over 250 KB. Our preset produces 630 × 810 px exactly when you select India.
Are glasses allowed in an Indian passport photo?
No. Since September 2025 ICAO enforcement, all eyewear is banned — including clear lenses without glare. Remove glasses for the photo. Even if your application photo passed before, a renewal photo with glasses will be auto-rejected.
Where can I print a passport photo in India?
Most local photo studios (फोटो स्टूडियो) in any neighbourhood print 8 copies for ₹100–200 in under 30 minutes. No — different format. Indian e-Visa, OCI, and PIO applications require a SQUARE 51 × 51 mm / 350 × 350 px photo, not the passport's 35 × 45 mm rectangle. Use the resize tool instead, or wait for our planned India e-Visa preset.
How recent does the photo need to be?
Within the last 6 months. The Ministry of External Affairs requires the photo to reflect your current appearance — significant changes since the photo (new beard, very different hair, weight change) are grounds for rejection.
